THE NEW RIG
There is a new sailboat rig on the water called The Flying Lateen.
The RIG, at least, is new...the lateen sail itself is 2000 years old.
Its raked mast evokes visions of speed, adventure, romance and the grace and beauty that such ships bring to mind. A better match of ancient tradition and modern technology would be hard to find.
2000 years of "sea trials" plus the simplicity and safety of current design and materials bring an unmatched level of performance and confidence to sailing.
In a word, it is designed to enhance the simple beauty of sailing.
....to minimize time hoisting, reefing and striking
....to maximize time actually sailing
....to minimize the hassle
....to maximize the fun
Simplicity is the key to "flying the lateen" - whether it is getting underway, tacking, jibing or securing her for the night - and is inherent in its design.
The Flying Lateen has resurrected the old lateen sail by simply getting the mast out of the way. Instead of cutting the sail at the mastline creating the "split rig", the mast itself has, in effect, been cut in half and spread apart allowing the lateen to fly freely between its legs. A swivel attachment at the hounds (at the top of the split mast) and another directly below it just under the boom, create an axis (formerly the single mast) around which the lateen sail, with its spar and boom, flies freely on any tack and/or any point of sail.
The one sail (equivalent to or larger in area than its split-rig predecessor eliminates blanketing the jib ( there IS no jib) and by the nature of its swiveling capability makes shifting from one point of sail to any other a simple "putting over" of the helm. Luff spar furling, for securing or reefing, finishes off a rig that is a wonder of simplicity. The dividend that goes with all this is that neither aesthetics nor performance are sacrificed; on the contrary, they are enhanced in every aspect.
....sail closer to the wind
....ease off and fly
